Origin

The Department of Medical Laboratories was established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Technologies / University of Sawa in 2020 where the main purpose of the establishment of the Department of Medical Laboratories was to provide students with the necessary scientific and practical skills in the field of clinical sciences.

 

The vision of the Department

The Department of Medical Laboratories represents an important and effective means to meet the community's need for specialized medical cadres in supporting various health research and educational institutions. In addition to seeking to invest the skills and energies of faculty members and students in theoretical and applied scientific research and studies, primary and even higher ones in the future. As well as training, awareness, health and scientific mobilization and within future foundations in line with modern developments through the acquisition of high technical and professional expertise and harnessing them scientifically and academically according to an advanced methodological perspective. We aspire to become a local and regional model in the field of medical laboratory education and research, to achieve this, the university has developed and implemented a curriculum by international standards, establishing a modern laboratory infrastructure with the latest model, and adhering to national and international health and safety standards.

 

Mission

The Department of Medical Laboratories was established following the community's need for specialized medical cadres with scientific specifications and modern technical standards and the preparation. Development of those cadres in the correct manner to work in various health and research institutions as well as in support of the private sector. Noting that the department has a clear future message with high ambition that seeks to provide the finest services and develop the teaching staff and students in the fields of science and knowledge research. The opening of graduate studies to increase the university's specialized balance as well as community services and expand horizons Scientific cooperation with the corresponding health and medical departments in other government and private colleges and related institutions to achieve continuous and high-quality giving and interaction.

 

Objectives of the Department

1. Work on preparing specialized scientific and technical professional medical cadres to work in hospital laboratories, joints of the Ministry of Health, public and private laboratories and other relevant departments to serve the community

2. Developing the research, scientific and technical capabilities of teachers and graduates, keeping pace with modern developments, and urging the use of advanced methods in the fields of specialization.

3. Work to establish strong scientific and research relations with the corresponding departments at the university and other universities through participation in seminars, courses and training workshops and invest them to develop capabilities as well as a mutual benefit to serve the public interest.

 

4. Providing scientific, technical and research consultations to contribute to solving some scientific and specialized problems needed by some relevant institutions.

5. The department aspires to achieve its desired future goals by crowning its scientific career by opening graduate studies in the department.

 

Graduate Description

A qualified graduate who completed his academic studies in the Department of Medical Laboratories and obtained a bachelor's degree in technology - medical laboratories, and possessed accurate detailed specialized information in his work so that this information enables him to work in medical and health jobs or centres. 

The Department of Medical Laboratories prepares and qualifies students to perform medical laboratory tests and analyze the results accurately and reliably. After successful completion of the study, graduates will be able to: 

· Collect, prepare, store and transport human samples for analysis using appropriate preservation and handling methods.

· Follow the necessary procedures, with appropriate guidance, and perform tests in chemistry, microbiology, immunology, immunology, hematology and molecular diagnostics. 

· Operation and inspection of clinical laboratory devices or equipment. 

· Diagnose and correct basic hardware failures and refer serious hardware problems to the supervisor when necessary. 

· Preparation of reagents or media according to the prescribed procedures, including performing the necessary calculations using an analytical balance and adjusting the pH if necessary. 

· Evaluation of media, reagents and standards according to the specified criteria.

· Quality control of analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media and products to evaluate quality control results and implement corrective actions when indicated.

· Basic quality control, confidence limits, and normal ranges of new procedures or methods. 

· Conduct comparative studies on new or existing procedures and report the results according to traditional scientific forms.

· Assess the reliability of laboratory results by correlating data with common physiological conditions.

· Identify the need for additional tests to obtain critical diagnostic information. 

· Advising new or less skilled students and laboratory personnel through lectures or demonstrations.

· Practice established safety standards.

· Inform the administrator of any unusual patient data or results. 

· Continue education to sustain growth in professional competencies. 

· Provide effective in-service continuing education sessions upon request. 

· Apply managerial and supervisory skills to accomplish identified projects.

· Comply with applicable regulatory laws.

· Work on quality assurance and optimal laboratory analysis.

· Manage laboratory processes and human resources to ensure high-quality and cost-effective laboratory services.

· Communicate effectively with members of the healthcare team, external relations, and patients.

· Evaluate published research and studies to stay informed about new technologies and procedures.

· Use information management systems to provide accurate and appropriate reports on laboratory data. 

· Act professionally and ethically.

· Focus on the patient to provide high-quality laboratory services.

1. The department has a staff specializing in the field of medical laboratories with competence and experience. 

2. The department aims to establish model laboratories equipped with all devices and equipment to examine patients and is considered an educational laboratory.

3. The department aims to open postgraduate studies in the future to provide research and educational institutions with qualified cadres

4. Securing the scientific resources needed by the student through the public library and the electronic library.

5. The department relies on the latest systems to communicate with students through the use of e-mail and an electronic lecture system.

Admission Requirements

The applicant must have an Iraqi preparatory school certificate in the biological branch or its equivalent.
